Public forms of transportation, planes, trains, buses, boats and also here in terminals, jim. elizabeth, when we first heard about omicron, there were real concerns this could be a marked change for the worse, but since then, the early data from south africa on omicron cases, particularly how severe they are, has been trending positive. what are we learning from the latest data? that s right. so let s think this through a little bit. a mutation that needs three things to be a true threat, one, more transmissible, two, needs to resist the vaccine to some extent and three t needs to cause severe disease. so this last one is what we re getting glimmers and i want to emphasize the word glimmers, just glimmers of possible and emphasize the word possible hope on this, and this is data out of south africa. so let s take a look. this is south african data on 42 patients with omicron. that s why i m being so tentative here. it s such a small number of ....

Shots and concerns are growing over the omicron variant. elizabeth cohen joins us now. good news that more people are getting vaccinated, elizabeth. reporter: it is good news. it s unfortunate that it took the fear of a mute ant a mutation to make them do it. or at least that s what it seems like. it is always good to have shots in arms. let s take a look at the numbers. if we look at the week ending november 21st, about 527,000 americans per day were getting their first covid-19 shot. now if you look more recently at the week ending december 5th, it was nearly 619,000 people in the united states were getting first shots. that s a big jump in just a few weeks. the obvious difference would seem to be the fear of omicron, which emerged during the two time periods. now let s take a look overall in the united states. about 75% of eligible people in the u.s., that s everyone ages 5 ....

Some of the pushback from the fda advisories earlier this past week. what would you say to your colleagues in the scientific community that have concerns about this moving forward? i d say we need to do a little better job at thinking about the science. some of the things i heard i felt like i didn t recognize the potential. for example, this drug does cause more mutations in the virus. so concerns were raised about whether that would cause a virus that was more dangerous. but in fact, it causes so much damage to the virus and decreases if it makes a ten-fold increase in mutation, it makes a 10,000 fold decrease in how much virus is made. the person treated with this would have less mutations coming out than the person who doesn t get the drug. so we need to really understand the science and be led by it and not by concerns that are sort of founded in sort of almost what i would call science fiction. can i ask given what we ve seen over the course of the last six or seven days, t ....

Actually sequencing that library. reporter: the world health organization and the cdc declared omicron a variant of concern after it was flagged by scientists in south africa. a mutation causes a peculiar test israel called an s gene dropout. n gene is the blue curve and the green curve is the s gene. it would normally up there with them? yeah. reporter: making a suspicious case easy to spot for expedited sequencing. we have about six samples that have that signature s gene dropout. reporter: sequencing is required to confirm omicron. scientists say they ve seen many different variants throughout the pan demic. some like delta become the dominant strain while others fade quickly or don t take off. there s no way to know what type ....
