MYSURU: In a special drive, authorities at Mysuru Central Prison have administered the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to all inmates aged 45 years and above. Plans are also afoot to inoculate all inmates above 18 years.
There are about 775 inmates, including women, at the prison and their health is being monitored every day. Officials say the temperature of every inmate is monitored daily, and anyone with symptoms is quarantined in a separate cell, which has been converted into a fever clinic.
So far, 30 inmates have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. They have been shifted to the Covid hospital and care centre. Meanwhile, a temporary quarantine centre has been established at a school in Kailaspuram where all those who have given swab samples for testing are being kept until results are released.

MYSURU: Kodagu, which virtually escaped unscathed during the first wave of the pandemic, is now facing a monumental problem as one in every four people tested in the district is returning positive.
In a week, Kodagu district’s positivity rate spiked to 27.4% — the highest in the state. Mysuru, at 22.7%, jumped to second place. Positivity rate is the number of positive cases per 100 tests.
State Covid-19 War Room data shows that after Kodagu and Mysuru the positivity rate between April 24 and 30 was higher that the state average in Chikkamagaluru (19.9%), Hassan (19.8%) and Chamarajanagar (19.3%), while Shivamogga (17.8%) was equal to the state average. Only Mandya district (17.6%) in South Karnataka had a lower rate than the state average.

Priests stay off ash-immersion ritual | Mysuru News

MANDYA/BENGALURU: With Covid-related deaths on the rise, there has been a surge in the number of bereaved families visiting Paschimavahini, the ghats of Srirangapatna, about 20km from Mysuru, in the past 2-3 weeks. But most families have to fend for themselves since priests are not willing to conduct the obsequies amid Covid-19 infection fears.
On Sunday, the state government reduced the number of people allowed to attend a funeral or cremation from 20 to 5 people. This will be in force with immediate effect till May 4.
After a person’s death, his or her family members visit Paschimavahini to immerse the ashes. Priests there said there is a significant rise in the number of families coming to the pilgrim centre since the beginning of the month when the second wave of Covid-19 started.

Mysuru: Private hospitals warned against turning away Covid patients | Mysuru News

The DC also urged hospitals against admitting patients in a critical condition if they did not have the facilities to treat them.
MYSURU: Warning the management of private hospitals against being negligent in treating patients admitted to their respective institutions with Covid-19, Mysuru deputy commissioner Rohini Sindhuri on Monday said, “Should it be found that a Covid-19 patient succumbs to the infection due to negligence of the hospital authorities, stern action will be initiated against the institution.”
The DC’s warning to the private hospitals comes on a day when the district reported 362 new Covid-19 cases, in addition to three people succumbing to the infection. On the bright side, 303 people who recovered from the infection were discharged. The total number of fatalities owing to Covid-19 in Mysuru district now stands at 1,086.

Covid-19 surge: ICUs of Mysuru private hospitals filling up fast | Mysuru News

Representative image
MYSURU: The intensive care units (ICUs) of private hospitals in the city are filling up quickly as Covid-19 cases surge. Many ICUs have reached full capacity in the past few days, and experts fear systems may get overwhelmed if coronavirus infections continue to climb at this rate.
“Our ICU beds are full. A month ago, we had two Covid-19 patients in our hospital. Right now, we have 20,” said Dr Upendra Shenoy, chief of medical services at Columbia Asia Hospital. He urged people aged over 45 to get vaccinated.
Ninety per cent of the Covid-19 patients at the hospital are those who didn’t take the jabs. According to Dr Shenoy, people in the 15-45 age group are getting infected in large numbers, so citizens should strictly follow precautions.

No blanket ban on Mysuru tourist spots | Mysuru News

ST Somashekar
MYSURU: Much to the relief of the tourism sector, district minister ST Somashekar on Monday said the administration will not impose a blanket ban on tourists in Mysuru district but will only impose some restrictions.
In the wake of the Kodagu district administration imposing a blanket ban on tourists and the rise in cases across the state, stakeholders in Mysuru were worried a similar decision would be imposed. On Sunday, fresh cases touched 200 — the first in two months. However, Somashekar, who reviewed the pandemic situation during a meeting with officials including the district deputy commissioner, police commissioner and superintendent of police, said tourist spots in Mysuru will remain open.
