Women who have seen and done the impossible, and who have discovered the youthful joy of surfing, are joining the local movement to have their inspirational wave, Nahoon Corner, declared a global surfing reserve. Fridays in the Corner parking lot at 9am have become a vibrant, not-to-be-missed calendar date for many of the 100 over-50 bodyboarders who pour their passion, power and experience into a newfound ecstasy, known by oceanators as ocean “stoke”.

It is super hard to believe that at the tender age of 47, Jean Michael Austin is gone. Jean ran on 440 volts while the rest of us exist on 220. He just seemed larger than life, fit, energetic and indestructible. At the time of his passing he was living in Cape Town, married to Angie (nee) Gafney (a handsome couple together) and raising fine son Trey, 10 years old.

It is hard for me to imagine a more delightful trio of pupils than our three Buffalo City surfers who have just received their call-ups to represent South Africa at the ISA world junior surfing championships.

I have had the great pleasure in recent weeks to meet two young American lads touring our geology and fine waves.Eneko Sancho, 21, and McHenry Jackson, 22, are geology students from Charleston, South Carolina.

Considering I had just had a few waves at Nahoon Corner, The Reef Cafe seemed like an easy choice and so close by, my feet were still wet when I walked in. What a pleasant surprise to see varsity friend Dianna and ain’t that just the joy of East London and the beach.
