Public hearing in Trenton draws quiet crowd - Mount Desert Islander

Public hearing in Trenton draws quiet crowd
TRENTON — Only one comment was made at the town’s public hearing Tuesday night, which was over in a matter of minutes.
Open to the public via Zoom videoconferencing, the hearing drew in several virtual participants and was held to discuss three referendum articles slated for the town’s warrant, one of which being whether Trenton should declare itself a Second Amendment sanctuary town.
Municipalities around the country have declared themselves “sanctuaries” as a way for local governments to oppose potential gun control measures that some see as unconstitutional.
In part, the proposed resolution states, “The Town of Trenton wishes to further express opposition to any law that would unconstitutionally restrict the rights of our citizens to peacefully keep and bear arms.”

Zero insurance hike saves schools $400K  - Mount Desert Islander

Zero insurance hike saves schools $400K
BAR HARBOR — Schools in the Mount Desert Island Regional School System (MDIRSS) will save a combined $399,819 because there will be no increase in the health insurance rate for the coming year.
Typically, in April, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield tells school superintendents across the state how much their rates are going up. But schools must have their budgets set weeks earlier, so they plug in a placeholder amount for health insurance.
For several years now, the MDIRSS schools have initially budgeted for a 10 percent rate increase, with the expectation that the actual increase would not be more than that. However, for next fiscal year, which starts July 1, the schools budgeted for an 8 percent increase.

Budget passed, middle school question voted on at Trenton Town Meeting
TRENTON — The town held its annual meeting in late Dec. at the Trenton Fire Station and via Zoom, following an election of selectmen and School Committee members.
During the meeting, which was moderated by Selectman John Bennett, the town voted to approve its fiscal year 2021-22 municipal budget of $915,000. This is in addition to the $4,321,885 school budget that was approved by voters at a special town meeting in October.
The increase in the municipal budget is 2 percent, according to Board of Selectmen Chairman Fred Ehrlenbach. That does not include the county tax assessment, which increased to $153,330, according to Town Clerk Carol Walsh
