Buckland, Alaska: Disaster declared after village was inundated by more than five feet of floodwater CNN 2 hrs ago By Jennifer Henderson and Hollie Silverman, CNN © Governor Mike Dunleavy/Twitter A disaster has been declared in Buckland, Alaska, following flooding caused by an ice jam. Residents of an Alaskan village were forced to evacuate after it was inundated last week by more than five feet of floodwater caused by an ice jam. On Monday, Gov. Mike Dunleavy declared a disaster in the city of Buckland, a news release from his office said. I have directed all state agencies to provide assistance in the most expeditious manner possible, Dunleavy said in the release. The flooding caused significant damage to homes, roads and utility infrastructure so a declaration is warranted to get the community back on its feet as soon as possible.

Mark Thiessen May 13, 2021 - 5:28 PM ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — An ice jam has caused widespread flooding in the community of Buckland, in northwest Alaska, officials said Thursday. “Even using hip waders, I can’t leave my house because the water is too deep,” said Nathan Hadley Jr., the vice mayor of Buckland. He called the flooding the worst he’s seen in two decades there. “Most of the town has been inundated, and the access road to the airport has been cut off by the floodwaters,” said Scott Berg, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fairbanks. There are volunteers using boats to take people around town, to the store and to deliver people to the air strip or pick them up for one of the two daily flights into town, Hadley said.
