Sri Lanka : Navy seizes 1900 kilos of turmeric worth over Rs. 11 million from Sinnapadu beach

Dec 20, Colombo: The Sri Lanka Navy has seized 1,900 kilograms of turmeric worth more than Rs. 11 million at Sinnapadu beach in Mundalama this morning.
The turmeric stock smuggled from India was packed in 59 waterproof polythene bags and then in fertilizer sacs. The market value of the stock was over Rs. 11 million, the Navy officials said.
The raid was carried out by the Intelligence Unit of the Udappuwa sub unit at the Thambapanni Naval Base. The suspects had fled in a fishing vessel during the raid, the Navy said.
The Navy officials said the consignment of turmeric had been smuggled from India by sea in violation of the quarantine laws. ....
