Marine debris ingested by 60-ton sperm whale believed to be a contributing cause of death : Maui Now

“In addition to squid beaks, fish skeletons and other prey remains, we found at least six hagfish traps and we also found significant amounts of at least seven types of fishing net, at least two types of plastic bags, a light protector, fishing line and a float from a net. We did find a number of things in the stomach of the sperm whale that may have contributed to its death and are certainly disturbing,” said Dr. Kristi West, the Health and Stranding Lab Director. ....

Impacts these offshore wind projects are having on our environment. noaa maintains the deaths have nothing to do with the turbines. we have also spoke to fishermen and women in the process of this. they say another concern for them is the location of these wind farms. many of them located within the migrating patterns of fish so essential to this area and in particular flounder. it could be devastating to the fisheries and put in to question the viability of large scale fishing in this region. trace: any word on when the necropsies will come back? the necropsy of the whale found this week has been conducted. one of the concerns that the conversationists we ve spoken to is they re not in depth enough. the first necropsy seemed to be ....

Was nicknamed luna. i just hope they re treating that carcass with some dignity. it was a living thing and it s just very somber. i hope they can find out what happened, too. i know there s been a lot of whales lately. reporter: late tuesday a team of about 20 biologists conducted a necropsy on the humpback. they determined it was more than 40 feet long, weighed some 29,000 pounds. it was a male that was about 40 years old. experts say they normally live twice that long. it was amazing to see this creature of this mag stewed on this beach and then after a couple seconds you say, and now it s perished. reporter: don clavin is the hempstead town supervisor. so what s going to be up here? that s when the burial will be. they ve already moved the first piece up there, the second piece is probably after the autopsy is done and lastly probably the fin. reporter: it s not the first or second case of a beached ....

Farming that s been going out here and the humpback whales, we put that question to those who are out here from the federal government to get their perspective on what s going on. yeah. again, it s a science-based agency. so we really go by the facts and the evidence. and right now there is no evidence to suggest there is offshore wind activity that is linked to any of these whale deaths. reporter: so again right now a necropsy is being performed. look at what s going on, the backhoe is up here. you see those mounds over there, alisyn and victor, that is where the whale is going to be buried. that is supposed to be some time later this evening once all this is wrapped up. but again, the big question as to why. why so many of these whales are doing it in such a short order of time. back to you. all right, jason carroll for us there on lido beach, thank you. now to this, an escaped ....
