The expansive earth-moving and busy construction crews on El Camino Real are part of the next phase of the San Dieguito Lagoon restoration.
In January, SANDAG and Caltrans, in partnership with the San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority, began work on the second phase of the San Dieguito Lagoon Wetland Restoration.
“We’re establishing safe zones for the natural wildlife so that our construction equipment stays out of their way,” said Jared Corbitt, engineer for Caltrans.
Work began this week on Phase II of the San Dieguito Lagoon Wetland Restoration project intended to create a new trail connection, expand river habitat and convert former agricultural fields to tidal wetlands, it was announced Wednesday.
