A ST MIRREN side managed by ex-Ireland international Jim Goodwin reached their first Scottish Cup semi-final in 12 years after beating Kilmarnock 5-4 in a penalty shootout tonight.
With four Irish players in the side – captain Joe Shaughnessy, Conor McCarthy, Jake Doyle-Hayes and Jamie McGrath – St Mirren progressed after the match ended 3-3 after 120 minutes.
McGrath scored a late equaliser in extra-time to bring the game to penalties, while Shaughnessy hit the net earlier in the game.

Hat-trick hero Kyle Lafferty is congratulated by Mitch Pinnock after bagging the opener.
It had all started so promisingly for Dundee United’s young guns but a Kyle Lafferty hat-trick proved, sometimes, there is no substitute for experience.
The Kilmarnock hitman bagged a 10-minute first-half treble to down the Tangerines’ tykes and send Tommy Wright’s men closer to Premiership safety.
With bottom side Hamilton losing to the Lanarkshire derby to Motherwell earlier in the evening, the Ayrshire men needed no bigger carrot.

Dundee United 2 Kilmarnock 0: Tangerines get Christmas bonus as both Marc McNulty and Lawrence Shankland get on scoresheet

Lawrence Shankland makes it 2-0.
Dundee United gave themselves an early Christmas gift as their two strikers finally hit the back of the net.
Marc McNulty’s debut strike for the Tangerines got them off and running on 25 minutes.
Then, just three minutes later, his fellow attacker Lawrence Shankland ended his own personal drought with his first goal in three months.
They were a couple of crackers that lit up the stadium on a bleak midwinter’s night.
Winning this fixture would have been good enough but to have McNulty and Shankland on target in the same game was a huge bonus.
