UNL to offer a two-week winter interim session before spring 2022 semester

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will have a two-week interim session prior to the beginning of the spring 2022 semester.  This two-week session comes after UNL held two three-week sessions during the winter break of the 2020-21 academic year — one right after the fall semester and the other right before the spring semester.  Leslie Reed, UNL’s public affairs director, said the three-week sessions over the winter break were due to COVID-19 precautions. University administrators wanted to limit travel during the winter, which led to an eight-week break. In addition, they wanted to offer students the ability to take advantage during that downtime through the interim sessions, Reed said.

Curious Cornhuskers: Faculty Senate denies request to modify Pass/No Pass policy, ASUN responds

As part of our initiative called Curious Cornhuskers, an anonymous reader asked, “Are there any updates on the Pass/No Pass policy for the fall 2020 semester?” Last week, the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska passed a resolution advocating the university to adopt an alternative Pass/No Pass policy for the fall semester, similar to the spring 2020 semester. The proposed policy change would have given UNL students the option to change their classes to Pass/No Pass after final grades are posted. All classes, including those not originally eligible for the policy, would have been eligible for the change. This policy would not have impacted degree requirements or a student’s GPA.

NU Board of Regents reflect on past year, look toward new opportunities

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents met Friday for the first time in 2021 to discuss goals for the new year. NU President Ted Carter reflected on the university system’s accomplishments in 2020 to adjust to the pandemic, and the resilience of everyone in the community despite setbacks. He gave praise on how the campuses responded and adjusted to the pandemic.  “There is a lot to look forward to as we go forward,” Carter said. “I am really proud to tell you that despite the challenges over the last year, Nebraska is coming into the next year in a position of strength.”

Faculty Senate, ASUN aim to reduce stress, prioritize health for spring 2021 semester

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Faculty Senate approved a resolution on Dec. 1 encouraging faculty to consider curricular adjustments for the spring 2021 semester.  Both the Faculty Senate and the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska have been advocating for changes to help the UNL community amid the continued pandemic, though the two differ in their approaches. The Faculty Senate resolution stated that eliminating breaks and condensing curricula in the fall semester led to heightened stress for both students and faculty in the fall semester.  The semester was shortened in the fall, removing breaks to discourage travel. The spring semester schedule was similarly compressed in October, eliminating spring break and beginning instead on Jan. 25.
