(Breeze photos by Nicole Dotzenrod) LINCOLN – Standing in the middle of a highway cloverleaf, a group of local residents laid down their shovels, shears and power tools and bowed their heads in prayer. They were about to set foot on a safari of sorts, crossing an off-ramp, trekking carefully along the side of the highway and clearing their way through a thicket of thorns to access what Ken Postle calls “the land that time forgot.” ....
4/13/2021 Antunes paints mural at NPHS North Providence High School senior Jonathan “JJ” Antunes recently completed this mural of Martin Luther King Jr. at the school. (Breeze photo by Nicole Dotzenrod) NORTH PROVIDENCE – A senior North Providence High School student has left his mark on the school. For years to come, students, teachers and visitors will enjoy a mural of Martin Luther King Jr. crafted by Jonathan “JJ” Antunes. The mural was completed as part of a service learning project under the Kingian Nonviolence curriculum at NPHS. Born out of the Civil Rights Movement, and MLK’s teachings, Kingian Nonviolence is a philosophy of nonviolent conflict resolution. ....
4/7/2021 Lincoln nonprofit spreads awareness about autism Lincoln first responders and members of the nonprofit Public Safety Special Needs Coalition display autism awareness flags, which have been distributed statewide. (Breeze photo by Nicole Dotzenrod) LINCOLN – A new flag can be spotted flying across the state marking Autism Awareness Month and encouraging acceptance. The flags were created by the Lincoln-based Public Safety Special Needs Coalition, a nonprofit group formed in 2018 to encourage local police, fire, rescue and mental health professionals to provide education and resources to people with special needs and their families. Since its inception, the PSSNC has educated first responders and held a number of sensory-friendly events for the community, including the first sensory-friendly touch-a-truck event, bowling with first responders, and a drive-thru trunk-or-treat. ....
3/31/2021 Committee questions new administrative wing amenities Officials are in the process of moving Lincoln’s school administrative offices to Lincoln High School from the former Lincoln Memorial School on Lonsdale Avenue, pictured. (Breeze photo by Nicole Dotzenrod) LINCOLN – Building Committee members, left out of the loop on a planned move of district administrative offices to the reconstructed Lincoln High School campus, are questioning plans for the space, including a new IT space and private restroom. Members of the LHS Building Committee recently expressed frustration that they’d been shut out of the administrative move process completely, and didn’t realize the move was back on the table after it was deferred early in the construction process due to lack of funds. ....
“What I walked into was horrible dysfunction. It was messy,” he said. “No one got along, there was infighting; nothing was getting done and the tax rate was climbing steadily. We hadn’t paved roads, all of our parks and playgrounds were ancient, our police station was undersized and completely non-functional. Our library was too small and our elementary schools were aging.” Almond had run twice, unsuccessfully, in 2000 and 2002 before he was elected in 2006. More than 14 years after he first took office, he is starting a new chapter as deputy chief of staff for Gov. Dan McKee. He described a culture of distrust festering at Town Hall and seeping out into the community at-large when he first took the office of administrator in January 2007. ....
