KENORA, Ont.  Thirty thousand households and businesses in Northwestern Ontario are receiving postcards from a group of organizations opposed to nuclear waste disposal in Northwestern Ontario.
We the Nuclear Free North calls itself an alliance of Indigenous and non-Indigenous volunteers and organizations who believe the risks of transporting and burying nuclear waste are too high.
It s delivering information cards outlining its concerns to residents living between Upsala and the Manitoba border.
The Nuclear Waste Management Organization has identified the Revell Lake area, about 35 kilometres from Ignace, as a candidate site for an underground repository, and is continuing to conduct studies in the area. ....

UPDATED: Highway 17 closed between Terrace Bay and Marathon


THUNDER BAY  A weather system that dumped 20 centimetres of snow in areas north of Thunder Bay by early Monday morning has disrupted travel on both Highway 17 and Highway 11.
Ontario 511 first reported that Highway 17 was closed between Terrace Bay and Marathon because of poor driving conditions.
Traffic control is in place.
Highway 11 was subsequently closed east of Geraldton.
At about 12:40 p.m., Ontario 511 reported that Highway 11 was then closed from Nipigon to Hearst, but it also posted another notice showing the closure was from Beardmore to Hearst. It s not clear why two separate notices were posted.
Single-lane closures were also reported earlier Monday due to collisions or disabled vehicles at other sections of Highway 11 and Highway 17. ....

Local dentist giving away $1,000 a month

THUNDER BAY – A local dental office plans to give away $1,000 a month for 10 months to an individual or family in need, or an organization that has been supporting the community during the pandemic.
Dr. Derval Clarke, owner of Sovereign Dental, said he and his staff have been lucky enough to remain open during most of the past year, deemed an essential service, but know not everyone has been as fortunate.
“Many people in our community our family, friends, neighbours and organizations have all been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and we want to help. Sovereign Dental has been fortunate enough to continue working throughout the lockdown as an essential service, so our team feels it’s essential to give back,” Clarke said in a release issued earlier this week. ....
