Amid uncertainty and changing regulations, SLO County's food and beverage industry adapted in the way only it could during 2020


March changed everything on the Central Coast. With the influx of COVID-19 cases in SLO County came stay-at-home and shutdown orders, shuttering once lively bars and restaurants and leaving them with one option serving up to-go food and adult beverages.
Waiters/waitresses, bartenders, chefs, cooks, bussers, and hosts/hostesses lost their jobs. Restaurants and bars tried to pivot their menus and offerings, cities tried to make streets and sidewalks available for outdoor dining. Some places closed temporarily, some permanently.
Local school districts and the SLO Food Bank stepped in to fill the hunger gap exacerbated by economic losses due to COVID-19 regulations. By the end of 2020, the SLO Food Bank had provided nearly 5 million pounds of food to more than 70,000 SLO County residents, 153 percent of the 3.2 million it provided in 2019. Through 60 distribution sites and partnerships with 82 nonprofits, the Food Bank provided food to 14,000 households per mo ....

Never in our lifetime have we faced a health crisis as we are in now. Getting back to “normal” clearly will not be happening for a long time. Since the county has reverted to purple, concrete action is being taken to limit the number and sizes of gatherings. Given all of the closure mandates in other parts of the county, Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area must be re-closed to vehicles.
Allowing visitors from outside of SLO County lines by keeping the beach open to 1,000 vehicles daily is an invitation to continued high levels of COVID-19 cases. ....

Multiple county fire employees announce their retirement


–Cal Fire has announced the retirement of several Cal Fire/San Luis Obispo County Fire Department employees:
Captain John Aguilera began his career with the State of California as a Park Aide with Parks and Recreation in 1986. Since 1987, Captain Aguilera rose through the ranks from Seasonal Firefighter I, Fire Apparatus Engineer to Fire Captain. Most recently, he was the Administrative Captain of the Emergency Command Center. Captain Aguilera retired on Oct. 31, 2020, after 34 years of dedicated service.
Captain David Latham started his career with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection on July 1, 1993, as a Firefighter II Paramedic with the San Diego Unit. His career saw him promoted to Fire Apparatus Engineer, Limited-Term Fire Captain, and finally Permanent Fire Captain to the San Luis Obispo Unit. Captain Latham worked as a Fire Captain Paramedic from July 1, 2002, until retiring Nov. 1, 2020, with over 27 years of service. ....
