New Mexico Auditor Colón to run for state attorney general By SUSAN MONTOYA BRYANMay 13, 2021 GMT ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) New Mexico State Auditor Brian Colón announced his candidacy Thursday for the office of state attorney general. The Democrat wants to follow in the footsteps of former law firm colleague and friend Hector Balderas, who is wrapping up his second term as New Mexico’s top prosecutor and consumer advocate. Balderas also served as state auditor before being elected attorney general. Colón, 51, is the first person to enter the race for an open seat that has been dominated by Democrats for the better part of a century. Republicans have held the office only three times in the state’s nearly 110-year history. ....
New Mexico now vaccinating children ages 12-15 for COVID-19 May 13, 2021 GMT SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) New Mexico is now administering the Pfizer vaccine for COVID-19 to children ages 12 to 15. Department of Health spokesman David Morgan on Thursday confirmed that the state is making that move to move to expand eligibility for vacination. It follow authorizations this week by the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The department is encouraging families to register children on the state’s vaccine website. The expanded availability applies only to the Pfizer vaccine, which until now was only available to people ages 16 and older. ....
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) A driver allegedly going the wrong way on Interstate 40 was killed Sunday after crashing into the back of a semi-truck, Albuquerque police said. The crash occurred early Sunday and closed part of the freeway for hours. Police said the wrong way driver was pronounced dead at the scene. ....
Judge: New Mexico must give at-home students fast internet By CEDAR ATTANASIOMay 1, 2021 GMT SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) A New Mexico judge has ordered education officials to provide computers and high-speed internet to students who still don’t have them in a landmark ruling that for the first time in the state has set a standard for internet speeds for public school children. The ruling requires state officials to immediately determine which students covered by the sweeping lawsuit are still lacking quality internet, or devices, and to provide them with what they need, including transportation if they can’t get fast internet from home. ....
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) The Navajo Nation on Thursday reported six new confirmed COVID-19 cases and three additional deaths. Tribal health officials said the total number of cases since the pandemic began more than a year ago now is 30,491 on the vast reservation that covers parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah with 1,276 known deaths. Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said more than half of the reservation’s adult population has been vaccinated. But people still need to stay home as much as possible, wear masks and avoid large gatherings. ....
