There s many nodes in this process you start outside with that crush trying to get in a tiny gate, which we had to do today, as soldiers kind of try to pull you in as the crowd push in on you to try to squeeze through. and then you go through different processing centers basically to get closer and closer to the flight pad. you see a lot of people get turned away if their paperwork isn t sufficient. all the people who we re with now are afghans. and actually as americans we were offered a separate flight out, but we are traveling with some of our locals. we didn t want to be separated from them. we re waiting to be able to get on a flight with them. the majority of the afghans i have talked to, some have green cards, some have sivs, which are the special visa that you need. their paperwork is in order for the most part. they worked as translators, a lot of them, for the u.s. ....

By the flight pad, there are hundreds of people. but there are thousands in other parts. there s many nodes in this process you start outside with that crush trying to get in a tiny gate, which we had to do today, as soldiers kind of try to pull you in as the crowd push in on you to try to squeeze through. and then you go through different processing centers basically to get closer and closer to the flight pad. you see a lot of people get turned away if their paperwork isn t sufficient. all the people who we re with now are afghans. and actually as americans we were offered a separate flight out, but we are traveling with some of our locals. we didn t want to be separated from them. we re waiting to be able to get on a flight with them. the majority of the afghans i have talked to, some have green cards, some have sivs, which are ....

CNN New Day With John Berman and Brianna Keilar August 20, 2021 10:05:00

All of those horrific scenes that have been going on. but then you still have a series of bottlenecks once you get inside. trying to organize even the vehicles to move these people that are coming in from multiple gates. they need to be processed. you know, there s about five or six nodes along the process. and at each of those nodes you get a major bottleneck. so i can say if we hadn t been spotted by a public affairs officer who very graciously took us to the airfield, we definitely would have been waiting for, you know, probably around eight or nine hours in the 100 degree sun. which is fine for us. but we were surrounded by families with babies. there s also a lot of delay and i don t understand why because earlier in the day we saw i think at least three u.s. ....

CNN The Lead With Jake Tapper August 20, 2021 21:09:00

Situation is horrifying. and i m looking around now at a sea of people lying on the floor or the gravel. there s nowhere for them to sleep other than a cardboard box. they are cold, it s very chilly, there s no blankets. the bathrooms here are in a very bad state indeed. and there s no sense of how long these people are going to be here. because for over eight hours today, no u.s. plane even left. so there s now even more of a backlog and a bottleneck than there was, jake. is there any sense of order when it comes to the effort to determine who gets to come into the gates into that last perimeter where the u.s. is and who does not? reporter: i think in the initial process you know, there are so many nodes along this chain. initially it s sort of like who can flash a document in the air and who can push the hardest/who ....
