On the same day, the state was staging fall sports in the form of state soccer finals, winter sports in the form of basketball, and the start of spring sports. That kind of confluence had never before occurred. Or, maybe it was April 1 that underlined this point with more clarity, with prep football played inside University Stadium, part of a five-games-in-three days “bowl game” experiment by the New Mexico Activities Association in lieu of an actual football postseason.

The Los Alamos High School girls went full-blown Godzilla on the rest of Class 4A on Friday. As part of a Hilltopper boys/girls team sweep, it was the girls who had the University of New Mexico track complex buzzing, as they piled up a staggering 183½ points. That was more than 100 points ahead of runner-up Artesia (76.2). Remarkably, Los Alamos’ total was higher than the second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-place teams combined.
