alphabetical order, they didn t even get past the cs, sealing a round one loss in a matter of minutes. mccarthy failing to whittle down the small but significant group of republican outliars all dead set on voting against him. the damage a failed first vote like this will inflict on the speakership position from the get go even if he does win, if it s a mess for republicans, a mess for mccarthy and it is shaping up to be a long day ahead for the brand-new 118th congress. he reminded reporters he holds the record for the longest speech ever delivered on the house floor, saying he doesn t care if he gets a similar vote for most speaker vote rounds. we will see if that holds and he sticks to his guns there. joining me from capitol hill, we have garrett haake. also with me, punch bowl news cofounder and nbc news contributor, anna palmer, as well as susan page. buckle up, everybody. we ve got an hour ahead of us here. beginning with you, garrett, walk us through what is happ ....
Have told me the former president a little gun shy about weighing in too strong ler potentially backing a loser considering he was blamed for republican defeats at the midterms. joining us co-author of politico s playbook, rachel, great to see you. the house reconvenes in a few hours in the building behind you. kevin mccarthy failed not once, not twice but three times to get the needed votes yesterday. what s his plan to get there today? well, look, it looks like mccarthy is going to try to rely on this sort of outside pressure campaign to try to move his detractors, you know, if he watched fox news at all last night a lot of their all-star cast as questioning why mccarthy s critics were doing what they re doing. laura ingraham was grilling chip roy, one of the guys who voted against kevin mccarthy on the floor yesterday saying what is your end game here? sean hannity coming out and saying this, is going to hurt the party in the long run, so, you know, mccarthy sort of last bit is to ....
And really speaks to the diminished power that the former president has in this party right now after, you know, midterms and shellacking that republicans well, i guess you can t call it shellacking. they did flip the house, but still trump s diminished power doesn t want to weigh in now because he doesn t want to look like he s backing a loser. you just hinted at. mccarthy has a real problem on his hands right now in that his detractors are furious his allies starting threatening them saying they could lose committee posts. the theory trying to argue he is owed the speakership because he raised money for them, campaigned for people, et cetera. last night they spent time working the phones and trying to whip more republicans to come out against mccarthy. i think that that s the big question for today. he s got to show mccarthy has too show some sort of progress. show he s winning people over, but the more likely scenario is that the longer this, you know, stays out there, unresolve ....
your reaction to what happened today? it speaks for itself. it speaks for itself. as one who loves this institution, i think it s a sad day. i hoped they would be able to put their what they set out to do, very sad. nancy pelosi no longer speaker but very much still a presence in congress. also former president donald trump is reacting to yesterday s speaker vote and seems to be wavering. speaking to nbc s garrett haake, trump said we ll see what happens when asked if he is sticking by kevin mccarthy for speaker. that s a break from what he said over the past few months where he has repeatedly backed mccarthy. trump took to his social media platform later in the day posting about the, quote, unnecessary turmoil within the gop, but stopped short of mentioning mccarthy or the speaker vote. mccarthy told reporters last night that he had spoken to trump and that the former president reiterated his support for him, people close to trump ....
