That were snowy or wet before. it s going to be very difficult for the next several hours, and very dangerous as well. and if that s not bad enough, the bad news just keeps coming because the snow is expected to return later today and into tonight. you can bet that freeways will be a disaster. it may be for that reason that the governors of both new york state and neighboring new jersey have declared states of emergency. and from governors down to mayors they are imploring citizens, stay home if you don t have to the federal government did so if you re nonessential, you can work from home. but don t bear the roads if you don t have to. if you were trying to travel somewhere, and i don t just mean where i am in the northeast or southeast where it s bad, the flights have been impacted right across this country. hello, california. it may be beautiful where you are, florida, it may be lovely. but your planes do come through these major, major hubs. and right now we re talking about fligh ....

Wolf, because it s starting to ice right now. at first it was really fluffy and now it s coming down as ice and stinging. people trying to walk down the street. just to show, it was powdery and now really icy. i m sure the photographer appreciated that. what they re doing, though, trying to keep everybody off the roads, telling nonessential government employees to stay off the roads. telling everybody to stay at home. and pretty much these people are supposed to be at work, but hanging out with me. and they ve been hanging out here for a little bit. this is parker. parker loves being out. and that person talking right there, this little person with hair is kita. hey, kita, how are you? hey, baby. they have been hanging out in christopher columbus park. what are you guys doing to try to mitigate this snow, so to speak? oh, sitting at home working. very easy. reporter: this was not here earlier. overnight, yes. reporter: are you surprised to get so much snow in one fall? no. we ....

In washington, d.c., nonessential government workers are being told to stay off the roads and stay home. cnn s renee marsh live at reagan national. for all the madness, good morning. reporter: good morning. you just gave that number off the top. over 2000 cancellations already. a typical day, we usually see around 200. we are well above that at this point. we want to take a look at the top airports that really are getting slammed so far today. this is what it is looking like. philadelphia right on top. they have month are than 400 cancellations. also seeing problems at laguardia, new york, newark, reagan, dulles, and jfk. this airport where i am, reagan national, they saw cancellations last time around when we saw this storm the beginning of this month. they are expecting way more ....

it s catastrophic. it could get a lot worse. about 45,000 people the u.n. estimates have actually fled on to u.n. bases, but of course, those bases are not really protected. the u.n. mission was having a lot of logistical problems before all of this happened. there was one u.n. base as you know that was attacked last week where two u.n. peacekeepers were killed, and also people who fled to the bases. the u.n. is now pulling it soldiers it has in neighboring congo to try and beef up security around those bases. as you said, the u.n. says it s flying all nonessential staff out of the country into uganda but also made very, very clear they are going to do their best to keep protecting the civilians therein 0 the grounds because what they want, what they don t want under any circumstances is for these ethnic tensions to get worse and for there to be any sort of massacres between these two tribal factions. that could very easily tear the country apart. tell us what the president is refe ....

Welcome. great to have you here today. hi, uma. great to be here. thank you. as i understand it, the breakdown forced the astronauts inside the space station to turn off all nonessential equipment to leave scientific research to stand still and leaving the lab in a vulnerable state. is replacing the cooling system a huge undertaking that has only been done once before? no, it has been done a couple times before. last time was in 2010, i believe. these are systems on board the space station that have a lifetime associated with them. there is a plan in place to replace them periodically. we have three pump moddums on the space station now as spares. those are put in place to get ready for the situations when they occur. until now, as you are obviously aware, spacewalks have been on hold. because of the italian astronaut helmet, which was flooded with water from the cooling system last summer in a space suit. ....
