Francs Jeux Four candidates for the 2027 Alpine World Ski Championships

Four candidates for the 2027 Alpine World Ski Championships
The International Ski Federation (FIS) can rub its hands: the World Alpine Skiing Championships are still very appealing. The international body announced it received applications from four countries for the 2027 edition: Switzerland with Crans Montana, Germany with Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Norway with Narvik, and Andorra with Soldeu. However, only one application was submitted in time for the organization of the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2027. It was issued by the Swedish resort of Falun. The FIS has also registered a single bid for the World Ski Flying Championships in 2026, submitted by the German city of Oberstdorf. The choice of host cities will be decided by a FIS Council vote at the 53rd FIS Congress (late spring 2022). The next two editions of the World Alpine Ski Championships will be held in Meribel-Courchevel (France) in 2023 and Saalbach (Austria) in 2025.

2025 Alpine and Nordic World Championships hold kick-off meetings

Newsflash
A major milestone was reached for the hosts of the 2025 Alpine and Nordic World Ski Championships as the two hosts, Trondheim (NOR) and Saalbach (AUT) hosted their first Coordination Group meetings last week.
The official kick-off meetings were a bit more delayed than the usual programme when hosting the World Championships as all parties had hoped that an in-person meeting would be possible to start the journey. But ultimately, the online meetings proved to be necessary and also proved to be just as informative and useful for all parties to get a first glimpse of what awaits the skiing world in 3.5 years.

"The feeling of a child who is sad when you leave the kindergarten, many recognise themselves in," Sandell told
Aftenposten.
"Then it becomes much more amplified when you say goodbye and know that you will be away for anywhere from ten days to three weeks.

Norway appeals disqualification

Top Norwegian skier Johannes Høsflot Klæbo had mostly experienced  victory, gold medals and admiration from fans all over the world, until last weekend. That’s when his controversial maneuver to get past arch rival Alexander Bolsjunov of Russia during the last race of the Nordic World Ski Championships ended with a disqualification, and cost them both the gold medal.
Norwegian cross-country skier Johannes Høsflot Klæbo has topped the winner’s platform on many occasions, like here at the last World Championship in 2019. He was forced off it last Sunday, even though he crossed the finish line first in the men’s 50K race. PHOTO: NRK screen grab

Skiing drama ends World Championships

Skiing drama ends World Championships
March 7, 2021
Norway and Russia literally collided when the Nordic World Ski Championships ended Sunday with the tough men’s 50-kilometer race. The ensuing drama capped a week of triumph otherwise for Norway, which totally dominated the competition and collected 32 medals, only to leave with some bad feelings on all sides.
The drama climaxed when Norwegian skiing star Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, who’d already won a pile of mostly gold medals, tried to get around arch rival Aleksander Bolsjunov of Russia just before the finish line. Klæbo’s left ski pole hit Bolsjunov’s right pole, which promptly broke.

The Norwegian womens Relay team performed at a high and was untouchable throughout any of the legs. Tiril Udnes Weng started off for team Norway and had Yana Kirpichenko, RSF and Katerina Razymova, CZE on her heels. The field of successors was stretched already in this first round along the Burgstall uphill. Especially the defending World Champions team Sweden struggled in the uphill and fell back.
In the first exchange, the leading trio had raced out a 20 second margin to the following teams of USA and Germany. In the front, Heidi Weng (NOR) and Yulia Stupak (RSF) set out and were not to be caught, despite strong effort of a high paced chasing group. With high intense “Klæbo steps” up the final Egli hill, Weng managed to claim a small gap to Stupak before the last exchange.
