Gov. Whitmer Announces $15.6 Million Grant for Talent Development

A new grant program is spending millions of dollars to get more people trained and qualified for better paying careers.
The MILEAP program has been a long time coming and now workers across the state are about to see the benefit.
This new investment is part of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s “60 by 30” plan, that’s 60% of Michiganders with a post high school certificate of some sort by 2030. It was a lofty goal to begin with and needed investment to get there. This $15.6 million investment is aimed at helping more than 5,000 people obtain that goal.
“We’ve got to make sure everyone knows there is a path for them to be successful,” said Whitmer, “And to have a good life here in Michigan.” ....

Northwest Michigan Works Receives New Funding To Combat Opioid Epidemic

Northwest Michigan Works is receiving new funding to help combat the opioid epidemic.
Part of that problem involves finding steady employment for those in recovery, as well as those who have been assisting in someone’s recovery journey.
24 Northern Michigan counties will receive $3 million dollars in funding, with over a million going to counties that Northwest Michigan Works serves.
This grant will ago towards hiring certified professional life coaches to assist getting workers back on track, as well as other services like training and transportation needs.
Northwest Michigan Works! says that they hope to provide a second chance at a quality career for those in recovery. ....

Manistee County Launches Michigan's First Police Officer Apprenticeship

Northwest Michigan Works has partnered with the Manistee County Sheriffs office to launch a unique apprenticeship for police officers.
The program includes 3,000 hours of paid on-the-job training along with 435 hours of related technical instruction provided through West Shore Community college.
Apprentices will achieve a National Occupational Credential through the Department of Labor along with other certifications and achievements.
“The Manistee County Sheriff’s office is pleased to be the first in the state to develop this in-demand occupation through a US Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship program,” said Brian Gutowski, Manistee County Sheriff. “Law enforcement and public safety departments throughout the state are experiencing expanding gaps in their workforce.
