The Norton Sound region’s first 975 doses of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Nome Wednesday The Norton Sound Health Corporation went straight to work administering those vaccines to residents in the nursing home and staff members on the frontlines. KNOM’s Emily Hofstaedter went to the Quyanna Care Center in Nome to see Nome’s first Elder get the vaccine. Phillip Dexter is a 96-year-old Elder from Golovin. He sits with his feet up in a cushy green armchair. Dexter is hard of hearing and there’s about twenty feet between him and the reporters, so the nursing staff helps facilitate the conversation. ....
The first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have officially arrived in Nome. The vaccine touched down at approximately 1:30pm today on the Alaska Airlines flight from Anchorage. According to Norton Sound Health Corporation (NSHC) spokesperson Sarah Richards, this first shipment included 975 doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Quyanna Care Center (QCC) residents and staff will be the first to receive the vaccine, along with frontline medical workers. Although there was no formal welcoming committee awaiting the vaccine’s arrival, two pilots and two members of the airport staff helped unload the vaccine from the airplane and prepare it for the next leg of its journey to the Norton Sound Regional Hospital. ....
The Norton Sound Health Corporation has announced nine new cases of COVID-19 in Nome. Five of those were reported Monday morning and four were announced over the weekend. All of the patients are Nome residents. NSHC reports two of those cases to be the result of community spread while six of the new cases are close contacts of previously confirmed cases. One of those cases is considered to be travel-related. NSHC is also reporting new hospitalizations. Their weekly COVID-19 dashboard has increased the number of regional hospitalizations of patients with COVID-19 from three to five. The state dashboard from the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services still only reports two hospitalizations for the Nome area. NSHC officials told KNOM that hospitalizations are reported after a patient is dispatched and that all of their numbers have been reported to the state. ....

Two more positive cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Nome within the last 24 hours. The patient in the most recent case, reported by Norton Sound Health Corporation late on Thursday evening, has been identified by the health corporation as a Nome resident. Health officials say that case is a result of community-spread transmission of the disease. That means that despite the decline in reported positive cases in Nome since the mid-November outbreak, the COVID-19 disease is still active in the city. The second reported case of COVID-19 in Nome from Thursday is considered to be travel-related. Local health officials say that individual is not a resident of the Norton Sound region. Though the case is considered travel-related, the corporation did not report whether the individual was identified through the City of Nome’s travel and quarantine requirements. ....
