The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Assam's Barak valley has been met with indifferent responses from intending applicants, who are more concerned about getting their names cleared from the foreigner's tribunal and abolition of detention camps. The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, was implemented in March to fast-track citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who came to India before December 31, 2014.

However, Aadhaar cards are not being issued to those whose biometrics are locked. Due to this, about 830,000 applicants have been deprived of this.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday informed that statistically Muslim community is now in majority in Assam and some districts have less than 5000 Hindus.

Notably, last Thursday, Assam Minister Atul Bora had said that the state government has decided to move on Supreme seeking re-verification of the NRC.

"Maulana Badruddin Ajmal is not going to be the CM. We understand the sentiment of the people, CM will be from someone among us mainstream Axomia people," said AIUDF MLA.
