NSF 101: The Mid-Career Advancement program

January 15, 2021
As a mid-career scientist or engineer (at the associate professor rank or equivalent), you are familiar with the pressure to remain productive in the lab, yet also obligated to teaching, institutional service and professional development. Being pulled in so many different directions constrains your time and creates inequities in workload, which could hinder research productivity and career advancement in the long term. To address this, the U.S. National Science Foundation created the new Mid-Career Advancement program to help mid-career researchers re-balance and prioritize their time.
Much like NSF’s Faculty Early Career Development Program known as CAREER, the Mid-Career program helps ensure the health and vitality of science at a sensitive career stage. It also aims to lift some of these constraints to support your scientific research career and help build and retain a more diverse science and engineering workforce. ....

Reawakened geyser does not foretell Yellowstone volcanic eruptions

Analysis of Steamboat Geyser finds relationship between column height and reservoir depth
A 2019 eruption of Steamboat Geyser in the Norris Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park.
January 13, 2021
When Yellowstone National Park s Steamboat Geyser which shoots water higher than any active geyser in the world reawakened in 2018 after more than three years of dormancy, some speculated that it was a harbinger of possible explosive volcanic eruptions in the surrounding geyser basin.
These hydrothermal explosions can hurl mud, sand and rocks into the air and release hot steam, endangering lives. Such an explosion on White Island in New Zealand in December 2019 killed 22 people. ....

Geoscientists develop new approach to understanding massive volcanic eruptions

First-of-its kind tool to understand past eruptions and improve future hazard estimates
Scientists have created a tool that can improve estimating hazards of future volcanic eruptions.
January 12, 2021
A team of geoscientists has developed a new way to reconstruct the sizes of volcanic eruptions that occurred thousands of years ago, creating a first-of-its kind tool that can aid in understanding past explosive eruptions and improve estimates of hazards from future eruptions.
The advanced numerical model allows scientists to reconstruct eruption rates through time by estimating the dimensions of the umbrella clouds that contribute to the accumulation of deposits of volcanic ash. The research is published in the journal ....

Genetic material packaged inside cells is more solid than liquid

Scientists studied chromatin DNA and proteins in the nucleus of our cells
Scientists have discovered that chromatin in a cell is a solid, not a liquid
January 11, 2021
Biochemists have helped answer a fundamental question that has lingered since the discovery of DNA: Is chromatin the complex package of DNA and proteins in the nucleus of our cells a solid or a liquid?
Cell, a team co-led by Jeffrey Hansen, a Colorado State University biochemist and molecular biologist, found that chromatin behaves as a solid or gel rather than a liquid. Hansen s team collaborated with University of Alberta oncologist Michael Hendzel on the study. ....
