maria: i want to ask you about your timeline because we know or at least the public understands that you can't move forward on things like tax reform and some of the other priorities on the agenda without getting this done. so this really takes on that much more importance and tomorrow we will hear from the cbo in terms of its analysis. i want to get your take on that because people want to understand how significant you can get the costs down. i'm being told that the affordable care act, obamacare in general costs a trillion dollars more than the original cbo forecast, is that true? >> it is and, you know, cbo is the only referee that we are able to use, to allow to use and you have to go with numbers. they have been off on healthcare estimates a lot over the years, i would say and on other things. under obamacare they said it was doing to reduce the deficit and increased.
a make sense. one, having a copper plan available for consumers. i support that. >> that already existed. that already existed. that was the bad apple plan the president wanted to get rid of, this high catastrophic-type insurance. >> low premium, high deductible. we need to offer that to consumers. this plan, obamacare in general is a great start. it's not an end to itself, it's a means to an end. >> why didn't they do it that way to begin w why didn't they allow people to keep plans to begin with. >> the whole idea is so cynical when you think about democrats pretending this is a legitimate strategy when even senator manchin himself say can't offer any bills with obamacare. the president doesn't want legislative fixes. why did they not put the copper plan in the first place, they called these predatory plans. the idea was to get young people off cheap plans and have to buy into bronze and silver plans to
it's hard to say how regular that will be. but as you mentioned, there are larger questions beyond that about obamacare in general. will enough young people sign up? we still don't know this. to subsidize the old. medicare, will they find doctors. will the people that signed up be able to see doctors on a regular basis or will they like a lot of places in europe have to wait mochtsed a months to see a specialist. we don't know this yet. it starts today and we'll begin to find out what exactly obamacare will do to our health care system and that of course will have political consequences. >>. >> quality of care could go down. but some americans are suffering not one, but two of the president's broken promises. you can keep your plan and your premium will go down. today's "new york times" recounts the 1k3er7s of one woman who was actually kicked off of her plan because of obama care. the best she could do on the
failure. >> check this out. with obamacare comes something else that americans really don't want to face and that's new taxes. taxes that will be on our tax bill because we were talking to charles payne about this earlier this hour in our first hour of the show. he wanted to tell us about 2014 to bring in new tax fees. 2% tax on every health plan. 2.3% on medical device tax. 3.5% fee on insurers for plans sold on healthcare.gov. >> isn't that amazing? we have got to go to the web sight to get our insurance. and by doing so then, there is is a 3. a% fee for using the web site, that ends up getting passed on to us eventually. >> what this really hurts, as charles talked about earlier, it research and development from our medical companies to perhaps find cures for things or to treat people better. >> that is one of the big complaints about the affordable care act obamacare in general. if this all gets watered down and everybody is in
that pool. that there is not enough money for research and development. that's one of the big concerns about obamacare in general. >> remember, we were supposed to be saving about $2,500 per family year and you are seeing these premium that was are multiple times what you're normally paying in a year and then you are finding out about these taxes it doesn't stop just at those high premiums. >> bottom lining, everybody would agree that something has to be done about healthcare in this country, however, they would probably like to take a better approach than what we are seeing right now. senator joe manchin, one of the leading democrats from virginia has put together a bipartisan bill to try to address this issue to come up with a better plan of iment plementing good healthcare that people can feel good about that's the master idea. they have put their lives on the line for our freedom. dealing with another pay
and then we have another full screen we can show you of what people overall are saying achievement. 22% a failure 36%. 36%. that's a pretty big number. especially when this is the president's signature piece of legislation bearing his name obamacare. you know. for a while, he wanted it to be called obamacare, and then he wanted it to be called aca and then it was back to obamacare and it was back and forth. do you wonder what 2014 is going to be like. you have seen people become even more outspoken on this on the sunday shows last week we heard from robert gibs you remember his former press secretary saying this has been the worst year of his presidency. but it seems like there is really no denying it. >> a lot of this is due to the affordable care act, better known as obamacare. as a result of that the president himself said the messaging hasn't been right. touting very viable. this past sunday sending out email getting people to sign up. people sign up and it still isn't ready what does this mean for us? it's merry christmas now,
the administration did tell commerce customers who failed online, when to pay. many health insurers are giving people until january 10th. many states have their other exchanges deadlines for first payment and some have more than one. >> makes already kind of chaotic situation even more chaotic. >> it's great that i think people do need more time to sign up, but the problem is it would be better if there was just one deadline rather than having everybody perhaps thinking that they have more time that they don't have. >> president obama is vacationing in hawaii where just yesterday he greeted hundreds of troops and their families. while he seems to be staying away from politics on this trip, officials have earlier said this week that they remain stead fast on the affordable care act. they say it's what's best for the nation. they also say the surge in traffic on monday and tuesday is a really good indication that this is what people want. >> we have made tremendous
technical improvements to the web site. when the web site was first rolled out in october. it was crashing regularly. it was not reliable. it now is reliable. and it now is reliable even while it is taking on significant traffic. more than a million people today use that web site. >> now, as you know, people have did have glitches can sign up today. really we don't know how many and how it's going to last. as we know the healthcare system does need millions more young people, the young and the healthy to buy insurance. of course they need to offset the cost of some of the older and perhaps sicker patients. >> that's definitely coming from the talking points of the obama administration so we thank you for that report. because, what she is talking about, is the fact that if they don't have these millions of young people signing up for obamacare it, doesn't work. they need that because the insurance companies need it. otherwise, we may be going to a place head on into what charles krauthammer used to talk about, the plan b of this plan, which is to bail out the insurers because they won't have enough in their base. >> it's not a financially
base were still standing by him saying this is going to work. it's going to really help a lot of people. we just heard josh earnest saying the same thing. but the question is, we don't even know if these enrollments have been activated when they do go get the healthcare, will it be sufficient enough when you consider the fact that there have been cancellations, deductibles are rising and now some of those people who have been in the president's corner, his democratic base are beginning to say well, let's become up and look at this again. >> i think that's part of the concern. you just heard kirsten powers, that sound bite saying this might be a problem felt down the road. she is insinuating the 2014 elections. now we are getting poll numbers out saying the democrats may be starting to leave obama's side on this thing that he thought he could hold everybody. in a lot of democrats are saying that obama care will be his massive failure, 25% are saying that this will be known as a complete failure. and that's of democrats saying that. >> yeah. that's according to gallup.
