Phoenix resident Mariano Villegas was shot by a Glendale police officer on May 3 and later died after police said he broke into a home at 59th and Northern avenues and barricaded himself in the garage, said Officer Tiffany Ngalula with the Glendale Police Department.Â
The officer who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice in this situation. The investigation is ongoing.Â
The incident began when patrol officers responded to a burglary alarm call. The alarm company also notified the homeowner, who contacted a family member to respond to check on the home.Â
The family member arrived prior to police and located an unknown adult male inside of the property. Officers arrived on scene and could hear a car horn going off inside the garage. They located the suspect barricading himself inside a vehicle parked in the garage. The suspect shouted to officers they were going to have to shoot him.Â

Arrest made in Glendale liquor store murder
31-year-old Jose Reyes faces a second-degree murder charge for allegedly shooting and killing a man in a Glendale liquor store parking lot in February.
GLENDALE, Ariz. - A suspect has been arrested after Glendale police released surveillance video showing a shooting in the parking lot of a liquor store last month that left two people injured and one man dead.
On March 11, police say 31-year-old Jose Timmy Reyes was arrested in connection to the shooting.
The victim's wife wants the suspect to turn himself in. She's now left alone with two young children and doesn't understand why the love of her life had to be killed, just for making a routine trip to a liquor store in Glendale. FOX 10's Justin Lum reports.
