Oldham Liberal Democrat Leader, Councillor Howard Sykes MBE, who also serves as Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group at the Local Government Association, joined over 30 Liberal Democrat Council Leaders and elected Mayors in England in writing to the government on this issue last month. Despite their plea to the Mr Sunak to respect January’s vote in Parliament calling for a permanent increase, the Chancellor has chosen only to extend the extra £20 per week uplift in Universal Credit benefit payments until the end of September. ....

Nine local government leaders - eight Labour and one Conservative - agreed to support the Labour Mayor of Greater Manchester in his call to create the new plan at a recent meeting of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. ‘Places for Everyone’ will replace the failed Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF) proposals which were scrapped late last year, after Stockport Liberal Democrat Councillors led the charge in voting against their Council being a party to the proposals. ....

Oldham Lib-Dems ‘disappointed’ at Boundary Commission’s decision not to cut councillor numbers Date published: 07 January 2021 Oldham Liberal Democrat Leader, Councillor Howard Sykes MBE The Oldham Council Liberal Democrat Group say they are disappointed to hear that the Boundary Commission has refused to cut Councillor numbers and costs by a third. The Liberal Democrats suggested a reduction in Councillors in their submission to the Commission late last year. Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council currently has 20 electoral wards, represented by 60 elected councillors. The Boundary Commission called for responses to a consultation to review the number of councillors in November. At the meeting of the full council on November 4, 2020, the Labour administration backed a report proposing that the status quo be maintained, but in the vote the Liberal Democrats abstained. ....
