Spanish conservatives retain majority in Galicia regional vote

Spain's opposition conservative People's Party (PP) is set to retain its absolute majority in its stronghold in the northwest region of Galicia on Sunday in a close-run regional election. The PP is likely to have won 45.9% of the vote, which is enough to retain a majority of 39-40 representatives in the 75-seat regional assembly, according to an exit poll released by state broadcaster TVE as voting ended on Sunday evening. The PP has ruled Galicia for all but four of the past 35 years and their leader, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, is a former regional government chief.

Madrid streets barricaded ahead of tense Spanish investiture debate

Police barricaded the streets outside Spain's parliament in Madrid on the first day of an investiture debate and vote that has roused anger over acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's offer of an amnesty to Catalan separatists in return for supporting his bid for another term. Having won the backing of Catalan separatist parties Junts and Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) as well as several other regional parties, Sanchez’s Socialists (PSOE) say he has enough support to win a vote scheduled for Thursday.

Spanish Socialists ahead but lead narrows before election -state pollster

Spain's ruling Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) is set to win the most votes in next month's general election but its lead over the conservative People's Party (PP) has narrowed since the vote was called, a state-owned pollster said on Friday. While most recent surveys put the PP in front, a poll by the state-owned Centre for Sociological Studies (CIS) between May 31 and June 7 showed PSOE gathering 31.2% of the vote ahead of the PP on 30.7%.
