A pricey rapid-testing programme rings alarms in the Netherlands

S
IPPING A BEER on a pub terrace may be the Netherlands’ holiest rite of spring. But the country’s grim incidence of covid-19, currently far higher than in Germany or Italy, has kept its pubs shut. As the weather has warmed, cries of “open the
terrasjes!” have sounded ever louder in Dutch politics, and this week the government gave in. From April 28th cafés may open outdoor seating (two people per table, maximum) between noon and 6pm. Meanwhile the state is eyeing a more permanent solution. It is funding pilot programmes to explore whether rapid testing of patrons can allow reopening of restaurants, museums, cultural events and the like.

Fieldlab experiments are 'a fantastic investment', minister says

Caretaker health minister Hugo de Jonge has refuted all criticism of the upcoming Fieldlab events, calling them ‘a fantastic investment which enables the organisation of great things,’ during a debate with MPs on Thursday.
Some 445 events have been planned until May 1 with a total of 232,000 participants who will all have to have test negative before being allowed in. However, experts have warned that opening zoos, museums and amusement parks risks boosting coronavirus infections and have called the number of events excessive.
De Jonge dismissed the safety risk cited by the Outbreak management Team, calling the events ‘epidemiologically doable’.

Fast-test event experiment foundation is 'not transparent' over budget: FTM

The Keukenhof tulip gardens were open last weekend
The way the Dutch government is spending millions of euros on experiments with fast tests and events is ‘extremely unusual, not transparent and unsupervised,’ website Follow the Money said on Tuesday.
In addition, the contract for the project was awarded to a foundation without being put out to public tender, as required by law, FTM said.
The contract was given to a new foundation – Open Nederland – which is led by former armed forces chief Tom Middendorp. In total, the foundation has a budget of €925m to run experiments throughout the year – of which €195m is the budget up to August.
