Call for action to support Pembrokeshire's ports


Pembrokeshire County Council has backed calls for the UK Government to take action to protect the future of Welsh ports.
“As an authority we recognise the importance of our ports at Fishguard and Pembroke, alongside the other Welsh ports that have direct links with the Republic of Ireland”, said Cllr Paul Miller, cabinet member for the economy.
“I fully support the Welsh Government’s minister for economy and transport, Ken Skates, who has written to the UK Government urging action to resolve the EU Exit’s ‘disproportionate impact’ on Welsh ports, including the ports at Fishguard and Pembroke”.
The call for action is in light of the impact on freight numbers as a result of Brexit, and while numbers are now beginning to increase, they are not yet back to the level pre-Brexit. ....

UK Border Force hit its recruitment target for extra staff to carry out customs-compliance work and and manage transit arrangements after the EU transition period – but needed agency staff to do it, MPs have been told.
Last November, the National Audit Office said Border Force was around 300 staff short of its recruitment target to hire 1,570 extra officials to cope with the new arrangements between the UK and the EU from January 1. The target was risk rated “amber-green”. ....

That was the message from KCC s senior highways manager Toby Howe to members of the Maidstone Joint Transportation Board as he reported on the effects of Brexit on the county s roads.

Mr Howe said the county had implemented its traffic management plan at the end of the transition period on December 31, with Operation Brock in place to control queuing lorries and with inland border facilities at Sevington near Ashford, and at the former Manston Airport.
He said that in addition to the new paperwork required by importers and exporters, there was now the problem of Covid testing for the drivers, but both Sevington and Manston were providing tests. ....

HGV’s hoping to use the Eurotunnel should continue down the M20 and leave the motorway at junction eight.
Highways England says COVID testing facilities are available at Manston Airport but have urged drivers to arrive in Kent already with a negative result.
The Department for Transport (DfT) has also urged drivers to ensure they have received a negative result before travelling.
A statement said: “Thanks to the support of the army, the backlog of HGVs in Kent has been cleared and hauliers making their way to Dover and the Eurotunnel continue to be tested swiftly and safely.
