Two rescued after being trapped in disused County Durham mine


TWO men have been rescued from a disused mine after they got into difficulty and became trapped inside.
Emergency services and rescue crews, including the  were called to High Skears Mine in Upper Teesdale at 12.47pm this afternoon.
It is understood that the two men had walked into the disused lead mine, which is a horizontal mine located in the Hudeshope Valley near Middleton-in-Teesdale, and became stuck.
A total of six fire crews from Middleton-In Teesdale, Durham, Newton Aycliffe, Seaham, Consett and the Special Rescue Unit from Bishop Auckland responded to the incident.
Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team, Cumbrian Ore Mines Rescue Unit, Cumbrian Mountain Rescue, Great North Air Ambulance, North East Ambulance Service HART Team were all in attendance. ....

Barrow 'littered' with old mines warns rescuer, after farmer's 60ft fall


A RESCUE leader has warned that the Barrow area is ‘littered’ with old mines after a farmer suffered a 60ft fall.
Emergency services rushed to a farm off Stank Lane in Barrow on Thursday after a quad bike rider fell into a sinkhole.
The man, thought to be in his 50s, was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital after suffering chest injuries in the fall.
Firefighters from Barrow and Ulverston Station, Cumbria police, Great North Air Ambulance Service and North West Ambulance Service all attended the incident, which took four hours.
Chris Jones, team leader of Cumbria Ore Mines Rescue Unit, said the incident was a ‘very rare occurrence’ but said the Barrow area is full of old mines. ....
