Introduction: In Australia, access to peer support for people who have a stoma (ostomates) in a group setting, is variable and impacted by barriers such as distance and availability. The ostomate-perceived value of peer support in relation to adjustment to stoma surgery has not been previously researched. The aim of this study was to explore the experience of people who have a stoma (ostomates) and who attended a stoma peer support group. A qualitative design was used to gather insights into the ostomates’ experience. Methods: Three focus groups were held with a total of 13 participants from an ostomy peer support group to investigate the role of this method of support in adjustment to a stoma. The qualitative data were organised using NVivo, and thematic analysis was undertaken following Braun and Clarke's six-phase process.
