BANGUI (CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC) - UN peacekeepers have deployed in the west of Central African Republic following surprise attacks by powerful armed groups involved in a deliberate attempt to disrupt upcoming elections in one of the world s poorest and most troubled nations.
The UN mission to the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) said it deployed forces on Friday following an offensive by the 3R, Patriotic Movement for Central Africa (MPC) and anti-Balaka militias.
The mission emphasises that these coordinated attacks in well-identified areas involve a deliberate attempt to disrupt the elections, said the mission, which has 11,500 peacekeepers in the country. ....

The government of the perennially unstable Central African Republic on Saturday accused former president Francois Bozize of an attempted coup ahead of next week s elections, after three main rebel groups merged and threatened to march on the capital Bangui.
The newly consolidated rebels occupy a huge chunk of the country and their surprise announcement heightened tensions ahead of the December 27 presidential and legislative elections, where the opposition fears massive electoral fraud.

BANGUI, Central African Republic: Leaders of the three main armed rebel groups occupying large areas of the Central African Republic announced a coalition Saturday, ahead of next week s elections and as UN peacekeepers deployed in response to fresh attacks.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed for calm and for all sides to work together to ensure credible elections there.
But the rebels announcement could further fuel tensions already on the rise in the troubled country ahead of a presidential and legislative vote on December 27, where the opposition fears massive electoral fraud. ....
