Parkâs Day of Champions Apr 24, 2021 Six Wheeling Park High School students marked an amazing feat last Tuesday, as they were crowned individual state champions. It started Tuesday morning in Morgantown, when junior Owen Leary captured the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle titles at the West Virginia State Swimming Championships. That afternoon, senior Abby Turner captured her fourth individual state title by setting a new state record in the 200 freestyle, and senior Jenna Bopp successfully defended her 100 breaststroke title. Meanwhile, on the other end of the state in Huntington, Park wrestlers Stevie Mitchell and Charlie Tamburin, both seniors, and sophomore Erik Brothers grappled their way to individual titles in the state Wrestling Meet.

A year ago, GW won both, and the boys team was able to repeat Tuesday at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park. The Patriots finished with 202 points, besting runner-up Bridgeport (165). “It feels amazing. I’m so proud of those boys,” Wheeler said. “There is no greater group of kids than those boys I coached. They are hard-working, funny and they deserve everything.”
