ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on Tuesday recommended elevation of Balochistan High Court’s Chief Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel to fill the vacant office of judge in the Supreme Court but deferred the case of Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar of the Sindh High Court (SHC).
Although a judge from Balochistan is being elevated to the Supreme Court after seven years, the last being Justice Qazi Faez Isa, the case of the SHC judge was deferred because of concerns expressed by different bar councils and bar associations since he was fifth on the seniority list. ....

Pakistan's new law criminalises military criticism with 2-yr jail term, sparks outrage

New Delhi: The Pakistani government has proposed a law that will criminalise the criticism of the military, which has been approved by a panel of the National Assembly the lower house of the country’s parliament.
The bill, which was approved by Pakistan’s National Assembly Standing Committee on Interior on 7 April, proposes to change the country’s criminal law and states that anyone who “intentionally ridicules, brings into disrepute or defames” the country’s military will undergo a two-year prison sentence or will be fined more than $3,200 (Rs 5,00,000) or both.
The bill, however, still needs majority approval in the National Assembly and the Senate (upper house) of the country’s Parliament. ....

ISLAMABAD: Representatives of mainstream political parties, trade union, civil society and human rights groups will address a national seminar on “Freedom of Press and Resolution of Media Crisis” to be organised by Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) today (Wednesday), says a press release.
The seminar is part of PFUJ‘s country-wide campaign “Enough is Enough.” PFUJ has dedicated 2021 to this campaign in which seminars, long-march, rallies and protests will be organised to raise voice against the prevailing media crisis and curbs on freedom of expression. Under this campaign, PFUJ has already organised four seminars in provincial capitals and a social media campaign highlighting media crisis and challenges to freedom of expression.
