WINCHESTER Although some west-central Illinois communities were able to lower natural gas use by urging residents to conserve during this month’s cold snap, they are worried about what will happen when bills come due.
Places like Winchester can see higher prices because of variable rates in their contracts with municipal and cooperative systems. Companies regulated by the Illinois Commerce Commission, such as Ameren Illinois and Illinois Peoples Gas, buy natural gas in advance of winter to ensure they are less prone to sudden increases in wholesale rates. ....

Loan Program in the Works to Help Communities Struggling with Natural Gas Bills

Area municipalities currently struggling in the wake of the natural gas crisis have some help on the way, with more to possibly follow.
Governor J.B. Pritzker has called on the Illinois Finance Authority to create a $15 million low-interest loan program to assist municipalities across central and southern Illinois.
Speaking at the Illinois Emergency Management Agency today, Pritzker was joined by the Mayor of Roodhouse Thomas Martin, and 50
th District State Senator Steve McClure along with a host of other central Illinois leaders to announce the new program.
Pritzker says “Illinois will use every lever of state government to support all our communities” after “catastrophic pricing surges” are now “demanding an unbearable financial sacrifice from small municipalities and their residents.” ....

Pritzker calls for $15 million loan program to assist areas hit by record-high gas prices

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced a low-interest loan program Tuesday to help alleviate the unprecedented financial burden from soaring utility costs for certain Illinois municipalities and their residents.
The extreme weather that devastated Texas’ electrical grid last week has resulted in skyrocketing natural gas prices in Illinois directly linked to frozen natural gas wells in Texas and Oklahoma.
“To put the severity of this crisis in perspective, the egregious level of natural gas prices would be similar to a gallon of gasoline rising from the current $2.89 per gallon to $289 per gallon,” said Heather Viele, general manager of the Interstate Municipal Gas Agency. ....
