AVON LAKE, OH Avon Lake officials are planning a tree-based memorial for former resident and member of the Citizens Tree Commission Russell Beck.
Beck died last week in Oregon, surrounded by his daughter s family, the city confirmed.
While living in Avon Lake, Beck served on the Citizens Tree Commission for 23 years. He was first appointed to his post by Mayor Vince Urbin in 1997. Beck s experience as a biology teacher at Lakewood High School made him the go-to guy for information about plants, trees and wildlife.

Russ was a kindhearted soul. He loved working with the city on its tree program. He fondly spoke about the farm and he always had a smile on his face. Such a good guy, said Joe Reitz, public works director, for Avon Lake. ....
