Slide near 'Jump-off Joe' condo spot on Nye Beach in Newport prompts closure

Slide activity at 'Jump-off Joe' headland on Nye Beach in Newport prompts closure

Officials concerned about landslide danger on a slope in Newport have closed the area to visitors.
The headland known as Jump-off Joe at the west end of NW 11th Street has been cordoned off due to recent evidence of increased slide activity, according to Casey Miller, public information officer for Lincoln County.

All that remained of the original Jump-Off Joe by 1970 were a few rocky outcroppings.
Jump-off Joe was originally a limestone arch that separated Nye Beach to the south from Agate Beach to the north and was a popular pre-WWI tourist draw.
