The French Symbolist’s colourful illustrations go on display at Waddesdon – for the first time in more than a century
After an £18.1m makeover courtesy of Wright & Wright Architects, the 18th-century almshouses that formerly housed the Geffrye Museum are reopening on 12 June under a new name. There is now 80 per cent more space for the museum’s collection of domestic fixtures and fittings through the ages. The temporary exhibition programme kicks off with the artist Polly Braden’s show ‘Holding the Baby’, which features photographic portraits of and interviews with single-parent households. Find out more from the Museum of the Home’s website.
This display at the Château de Fontainebleau presents an exceptional group of diplomatic gifts, offered by Shogun Iemochi to Napoleon III between 1860–64, shortly after Japan opened to the West in 1854. Among them are a group of 10 exquisite kakemono paintings on silk, a folding screen with a scene of a horseman among misty mountains painted on gold leaf, and cabinets with intricate lacquer panelling inlaid – in short, a collection fit for an emperor. The exhibition runs from 4 June to 20 September; find out more from the Château de Fontainebleau’s website.
Paul Cézanne believed that drawing taught him to ‘see well’, and the post-Impressionist’s works on paper often reveal him at his most innovative and daring. This display of some 250 works at MoMA (6 June–25 September) ranges from translucent watercolours to bold essays in linear perspective, and across Cézanne’s long career. Find out more from MoMA’s website.
