With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. Ag employers will be protected from retroactive overtime lawsuits, but a harvest season exemption to overtime was not included in the overtime bill that passed in Olympia.
The Washington Farm Bureau’s Breanne Elsey says there seems to be enough support so they’ll work on it again next session …
ELSEY … “We were actually surprised. There is a significant amount of Democrats, the majority party, who really felt that that was fair as well. There was a group of them who were quite supportive of the seasonality amendment.” ....

With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. An acceptable version of the agriculture overtime bill has passed in the House and now heads to Governor Inslee’s desk for signing.
Breanne Elsey, with the Washington Farm Bureau, says an exemption for harvest season was not included in the final bill, but it’s not going away …
ELSEY … “Yes, that will be something that we continue to work on over the next several sessions. We do have a little buffer, a little bit of time to work with before it becomes that critical time of just that 40-hour week threshold.” ....

With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. The agriculture overtime bill has made it through the House and is headed for Governor Inslee’s desk, and while it’s not perfect it’s much better than it could have been.
Breanne Elsey, with the Washington Farm Bureau, says that’s putting it mildly …
ELSEY … “If folks will remember, early on, this bill was an absolute train wreck. And that’s why, at certain points in session, you saw Farm Bureau go opposed to the bill instead of pro. And, that’s because we really had to dig in our heels a couple of times and say, you know what, this bill is not okay the way it’s currently written.” ....
