Updated: 5:28 PM EST Feb 24, 2021 Howard County Public School buses now have external cameras to catch drivers who illegally pass while students are getting on and off stopped buses.Beginning March 1, when in-person instruction is scheduled to start, the cameras will capture license plates of cars that illegally pass stopped buses with red lights flashing.From March to April 1, violators will receive a warning. Starting April 1, drivers who pass stopped buses must pay a $250 fine.The county will use the fines to pay for the cameras.School buses serve more than 10,000 bus stops in Howard County every school day, transporting approximately 41,000 students. In a one-day survey conducted by bus drivers prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 290 drivers failed to legally stop while a bus was picking up or dropping off students.The school system partnered with the Howard County Police Department for the program. ....
