The collection of 350 items includes everything from jewelry to furniture, paintings and books
When it comes to dynasties, you don’t get much more quintessential than the Mountbattens. The family links go right to the heart of the current British royal family (Mountbatten-Windsor is, of course, the surname of the Queen’s descendants) with a bloodline that can be traced back to both Queen Victoria and the last Tsarina of Russia.
So when Sotheby s London auction house opens its sale of property from the collection of the 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma, Patricia Mountbatten, an extraordinary slice of society history will be going under the hammer. Some 350 lots will be auctioned on March 24, with items including jewelry, furniture, paintings, sculpture, and books. Honoring the wishes of the late Countess Mountbatten and her late husband, 7th Baron Brabourne, the auction features items that once belonged in their eighteenth-century Kent home, Newhouse. With lot estimates ranging from £80 to £100,000, the sale is expected to total at least £1.5 million.

He was father to two daughters: Patricia Knatchbull, later 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma, and Lady Pamela Hicks.
Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth first met at the 1934 wedding of Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark and Prince George, Duke of Kent.
Philip and Elizabeth would meet again in 1939, while King George VI toured the grounds of the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, where Philip was attending at the time.
It is thought the Queen Mother and Lord Mountbatten asked Philip to escort Princess Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret during the visit.
The pair went on to exchange letters, and would eventually formally become engaged in 1947.

The Queen and Prince Philip tied the knot in 1947, and the pair are widely regarded as one of the most successful royal unions in modern history. The Queen and Prince Philip have now been married for more than 70 years. But several years ago, it was Lord Louis Mountbatten who was often credited as bringing then-Princess Elizabeth and Philip together.

The fourth season of The Crown explores the familial politics and often complex inner workings of the royal family between 1977 and 1990 following on from the last series, which ended in 1977.
Several historical events are covered in the series, including Margaret Thatcher’s appointment as prime minister, the Falklands War and the intrusion of Michael Fagan into Buckingham Palace in the early 1980s.
It also features the funeral of Lord Mountbatten, who was assassinated by the IRA in August 1979, and is played by Game of Thrones star Charles Dance, who succeeded actor Greg Wise after the first two seasons.
