Someone’s going to have to brief Liz Truss on what’s really going on in Ukraine. Some poor soul will have to strip away the lies that both sides are telling and give her the cold reality - and I wish them the best of luck. Whilst acknowledging that truth’s in short supply over there, I do believe that things are changing rapidly.

They lie: both sides lie like cheap watches.  Yet, through the mists of mendacity, I think there are signs of a sizeable shift in both the politics and strategy of the war in Ukraine.  That shift will, I suspect, become a landslide as the winter affects soldiers and politicians alike, but more of that later.

There’s something either hugely sinister going on – or something astonishingly stupid: I just can’t work out which.

I can think of only two commanders-in-chief in recent history who’ve told their enemies exactly what they were about to do: Presidents Obama and Biden.
