2021 Christopher Award winners celebrate diverse stories of courage, faith, compassion and hope

2021 Christopher Award winners celebrate diverse stories of courage, faith, compassion and hope
Here’s the latest from the crossroads of faith, media & culture: 04/14/21
72nd annual Christopher Award winners announced. COVID-19 has again scuttled the in-person event but the virus hasn’t stopped the Catholic organization from proceeding with, as it has done since instituting the awards in 1949, celebrating media artists whose work “affirms the highest values of the human spirit” and reflects the Christopher motto that “It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.”
Of this year’s winners, Christophers Director of Communications Tony Rossi says “The stories we are honoring introduce us to people and experiences that may not be a part of our everyday lives…Stories of refugees fleeing violence and persecution, for instance, or young caregivers devoting themselves to loved ones with dementia and other medical issues remind us how much we have in common even when the particulars of our lives differ. They remind us that we are all children of the same God, that we are all worthy of compassion and respect, and that the power of love and faith can change the world for the better.”

Knock National Irish Mary Garden : University of Dayton, Ohio

– Brother Sean MacNamara
Our Lady of Knock
On a wet Thursday evening, August 21st, 1879, fifteen people watched - for about two hours - a heavenly vision consisting of Our Lady, St. Joseph, St. John, the Heavenly Lamb and adoring Angels at the Church of St. John the Baptist in Knock, Co. Mayo, Ireland - now the National Irish Shrine of Our Lady, visited by over a million pilgrims annually.
Many readers of this article will know of the famous Rosary priest, Fr. Patrick Peyton, born in Mayo and a regular visitor to Knock.
Were it not that in 1972 I had read in one of Ireland's weekly Catholic papers about the Mary Garden movement established in Philadelphia in 1951 by John S. Stokes, Jr., and the late Edward A. G. McTague, the chances are we would not now have our Irish National Mary Garden at the Shrine.

Changing Nations by Strengthening Families Through Faith: Rev. David Guffey

Changing Nations by Strengthening Families Through Faith: Rev. David Guffey
Encouraging families to pray together connects them, strengthens the bond between their members through faith and this can have a ripple effect throughout society, changing the whole nation, Rev. David Guffey told The Epoch Times.
Through peaceful prayer gatherings people in the Philippines were able to overcome political turmoil in 1986, Guffey, executive producer of the documentary “Pray: The Story of Patrick Peyton,” said on The Epoch Times’ “Crossroads.”
Guffey’s documentary tells the story of Rev. Patrick Peyton, an Irishman who emigrated to America with a dream of becoming a millionaire, but instead became a Catholic priest who promoted “the power of family prayer” through massive rallies and media shows featuring celebrities.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed a list of the feature films that are eligible for Best Picture consideration at the 93rd Oscars. Set to air on April 25, the list contains 366 films including some foreign projects. South superstar Suriya's
Soorarai Pottru is in the race. The film is loosely based on the book encapsulating the life of a retired Army Captain, G. R. Gopinath who founded Air Deccan, a low-cost airline. The movie is directed by Sudha Kongara, bankrolled by Guneet Monga's Sikhya Entertainment.
To be eligible for consideration under rules provisions implemented for the 93rd Academy Awards year only, feature films may open in a commercial motion picture theater in at least one of six U.S. metropolitan areas: Los Angeles County; the City of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia, by February 28, 2021, and complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue. Drive-in theaters open nightly are included as qualifying commercial venues in the above cities. Films intended for theatrical release but initially made available through commercial streaming, VOD service or other broadcasts may qualify if the film is made available on the secure Academy Screening Room member site within 60 days of the streaming/VOD release or broadcast. Feature films must have a running time of more than 40 minutes.

From March 5-10, Academy members will nominate between five and 10 films, with options ranging from 'Absent Now the Dead' to 'You Cannot Kill David Arquette.'
Three hundred sixty-six feature films — meaning 40 minutes or longer — have been deemed eligible for the best picture Oscar at the 93rd Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Thursday as it released its annual "reminder list" for members.
This is the highest tally of eligible titles in 50 years — there were 374 titles eligible in 1970 — but only the 22nd-highest total in the history of the Oscars. The first Oscars ceremony considered films from 1927 and 1928, hence its record-setting 562 entries. The rest of the top 20 is filled with other years from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.
