(ANSA) - ROME, APR 19 - The government on Monday will start
to "verify the conditions for the granting of Italian
citizenship to Patrick Zaki", Foreign Affairs Undersecretary
Benedetto Della Vedova told Rainews24.

Zaki is an Egyptian Bologna University postgraduate student who
has been held in Egypt since February 7 last year on charges of
"disseminating false news" and "incitement to protest".

The Senate last week approved a motion calling on the government
to grant him Italian citizenship.

Della Vedova likened Zaki's case to the "tragic affair" of
Italian student Giulio Regeni, who was tortured to death in
Cairo in early 2016.

"The parliamentary motion gives a commitment to the government,

Minister Di Maio: from the openings towards China and Putin’s Russia by the Conte led government to the new strong Atlantic policy voiced by Draghi’s new cabinet. Governments come and go but you’re still in charge of foreign policy. How do you explain this renewed pro-US stance?
«Well, Italy has never changed its geopolitical fundamentals. Our governments have always been loyal to the Atlantic Alliance. Furthermore, Joe Biden's administration has changed its approach compared to Trump. Rome and Washington have never been so close. The new US administration has scrapped isolationism and we are perfectly aligned when it comes to the fundamental issues, such as the defence of human rights or the environment. I have just been to Washington, mine being the first visit by a foreign minister since Biden's inauguration, to emphasise Italy’s credentials as a solid and reliable interlocutor. At the same time, in the first few months of this year, we have seen trade with China grow by more than two billion euros compared to 2020 and we are committed to strongly supporting our businesses. However, I have never ceased to express to the Chinese leaders our concerns about the crackdown on the Uighur Muslim minority and the Hong Kong riots. I also agree with the Biden administration in condemning the repression in Belarus or the persecution of Aleksej Navalny by the Putin regime».

ROME, APR 14 - The Senate on Wednesday approved a
motion to grant Italian citizenship to Patrick Zaki, an Egyptian
Bologna University postgraduate student held in Egypt since
February 7 last year on charges of "disseminating false news"
and "inciting to protest".
The motion was approved by 2018 votes to nil with 33

The nationalist Brothers of Italy (FdI) party abstained.

(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 31 - Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said
Wednesday that Italy would never give up seeking the truth about
the "barbaric slaying" of Italian student Giulio Regeni in Cairo
in early 2016 and would also keep up "all efforts" to see that
Bologna University Egyptian student Patrick Zaki is released.

In a statement to the Senate on the foreign ministry's agenda,
Di Maio added that "at the same time it is however important to
keep open with Cairo also a channel of dialogue on the
fundamental questions for the stability of the Mediterranean,
such as for example Libya and energy security".

Italy advances arms deals with Egypt despite opposition

Italy advances arms deals with Egypt despite opposition
As Egypt becomes one of the world's largest importers of arms, Italy is seeking to sign additional arms deals with the North African country despite sour bilateral relations in light of Egypt’s human rights record.
Egypt has agreed to buy two FREMM multipurpose frigates from Italy. The frigates are designed by DCNS/Armaris and Fincantieri for the navies of France and Italy. Here, a frigate under construction at the shipyards of Naval Group (formerly DCNS) is seen March 29, 2018 in Lorient, western France.
March 27, 2021
It seems Italy has insisted on carrying on with arms deals with Egypt despite the tensions that have marked their bilateral relations following the 2016 death of Italian student Giulio Regeni in Cairo.

Patrick deve tornare a casa!".

The appeal: "Release Zaki to visit his sick father"

Another hearing for Patrick Zaki, detained in Egypt since February 7 last year on charges of subversive propaganda via Facebook.
It took place as usual at the Institute for Police Assistants attached to the Tora prison complex, on the far southern outskirts of Cairo, where the 29-year-old is being held.
The student of the Bolognese Alma Mater did not take advantage of the opportunity to speak this time, the activists of the "Patrick Libero" group reported. To find out what the judges' decision will be, we will have to wait for Tuesday, one more day than usually happens.

Egyptian Christians have long struggled to build their churches.
But now, they can have Muslim help.
Last month, Egypt’s Grand Mufti Shawki Allam issued a
fatwa (religious ruling) allowing Muslim paid labor to contribute toward the construction of a church. Conservative scholars had argued this violated the Quranic injunction to not help “in sin and rancor.”
The ruling is timely, as the governmental Council of Ministers recently issued an infographic highlighting the 2020 land allocation for 10 new churches in eight Egyptian cities. An additional 34 are currently under construction.
Prior to this, two prominent examples stand out. In 2018, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi inaugurated the Church of the Martyrs of Faith and Homeland in al-Our, a village in Upper Egypt, to honor the Copts beheaded by ISIS in Libya. And in 2019, he consecrated the massive Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ in what will become the new administrative capital of Egypt, alongside its central mosque.

The hearing on the possible renewal of Patrick Zaki's pre-trial detention was held today. The hearing took place regularly in the presence of the accused and his lawyers. An official of the Italian Embassy was also present, as part of the monitoring programme coordinated by the European Union. The outcome of the hearing is expected for tomorrow.
At the moment this is the only case that is constantly monitored by a group of foreign countries thanks to the Italian initiative. Recently, the Italian Foreign Ministry, through its Embassy in Cairo, has continued to sensitize the local authorities on the case, so as to facilitate the young student’sprompt release.

Giulio Regeni: Family of murdered academic complain over Italy selling arms to Egypt

Card image cap

Two weeks earlier, Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi had received the Legion of Honour at the Elysée Palace from the hands of French President Emmanuel Macron.
Since coming to power in 2014, al-Sisi has intensified the arms trade with both countries, as well as with China.
If France is the main exporter of arms to Cairo, Italy isn’t far behind, and since the killing of Italian academic Giulio Regeni, Rome has not stopped signing contracts for military orders with Egypt.
Regeni was a 28-year-old Cambridge University doctoral student, who went missing in Cairo in January 2016. His mutilated body was found days later in the city's suburbs, and a post-mortem examination showed he had been tortured.

Open letter to the European Union and its Member States on Egypt

Dear High Representative,
Dear Foreign Ministers,
We are writing ahead of the January 25th Foreign Affairs Council discussion on Egypt to raise our serious concerns, once again, about the human rights crisis unfolding in the country, and to urge the EU and its member states to take the long overdue steps needed to signal that Egypt’s disregard for human rights will no longer be tolerated.
As we near the 10th anniversary of Egypt’s 2011 revolution, the hopes for freedom and human rights-oriented reform that led Egyptians to take to the streets almost a decade ago, have been shattered by years of brutal repression and a relentless crackdown on any form of dissent. In a letter sent to you nearly one year ago, international human rights NGOs urged the

Listen to article
The education of over 11 million young girls hang in the balance as they are likely to remain home during the 2021 academic year as a result of the covid-19 pandemic.
To this end, the General Secretary of All-Africa Students Union (AASU), Mr. Peter Kwasi Kodjie is urging governments across the continent to take drastic measures to ensure the education of these vulnerable girls is not truncated.
In his solidarity message for 2021 to African governments and students on the continent, the Secretary-General of the largest student organization in Africa outlined several challenges impeding education in Africa, prominent amongst them being child labour.

EU Parliament calls for action over Egypt's human rights abuses | Europe News

Egypt rejected the resolution later on Friday, accusing the EU Parliament of pursuing “politicised objectives and an unbalanced policy”.
“The resolution is also unacceptable because it includes many misguided statements about the situation of human rights in Egypt, not to mention that it is not in harmony with the Egyptian-European partnership,” read a statement by Egypt’s House of Representatives, cited by pro-government news website Ahram.
Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has come under international scrutiny for the country’s abuse of human rights defenders after three activists from the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) were imprisoned by security forces on charges of “joining a terror group” and “spreading false news”.

S&Ds: EU Parliament condemns Egypt for blatant human-rights violations. Relationships with Cairo must be revised

Published:

Following the approval of the resolution on ‘The deteriorating situation of human rights in Egypt, in particular the case of the activists of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR)’, the Socialists and Democrats reiterate their strong condemnation of the open and widespread human-rights violations currently taking place in Egypt and demand the release of Patrick Zaki, along with all those imprisoned for their opinions and for political reasons.
The S&D shadow rapporteur, Pierfrancesco Majorino
MEP
, stated:
"The European Parliament has sent a very clear message to Egypt about the deteriorating situation of human rights: the deterioration is blatant, widespread and calls into question the relationship between the EU and Egypt. The vote on the resolution today represents a severe condemnation of the repression that is taking place against civil society, of the harassment, mass arrests, torture and abuse of inmates, systematic use of pre-trial detention, harassment against women and LGBTI communities, and attacks on freedom of expression.
