BOOKWORMS staged a mammoth fundraising effort for their school. Pupils held a sponsored reading event and raised more than £1,600 for new books at Highwoods Primary School, in Colchester. They accumulated minutes for reading, so the more they read, the more was donated. Usborne Books kindly added a further 60 per cent, bringing the total over £2,500. Then, thanks to previous parent donations of more than £2,000 during the last lockdown, the grand total reached an impressive £4,500. Headteacher Paul Disley said: “We’re so grateful to our families for their support and are proud of our parent community. “They continue to support us and make our school an even better place to be.
Warning after reports of suspicious man acting aggressively around schools A PRESCHOOL has issued a warning following reports of a man behaving suspiciously around schools in a part of Colchester. Squirrels Preschool, in Highwoods, is advising parents to be extra cautious after a man was sighted acting aggressively in the area. The warning, shared on the preschool s social media site yesterday, said the man is described as being in his 50s with white hair. A statement from the preschool, rated Outstanding by education watchdog Ofsted, said: We would advise parents to be extra cautious and to remind children about the dangers of talking to strangers.

Revealed: The 10 most popular Colchester schools THE most in-demand Colchester primary schools for the next academic year have been revealed. Data from Essex County Council shows which schools across Colchester received the most applications from parents and carers with children due to start reception in September. The most popular four schools out of the 59 listed for the area were Hamilton Primary School, St John’s Green Primary School, Home Farm Primary School and Highwoods Community Primary. Hamilton Primary School was at the top of the list. A total of 303 children applied for the school with 126 putting it as their first choice.
