Keeping pools free of hidden electrical hazards | Orange County Breeze

Much like a game of F-I-S-H, swimming pool owners should perform a task that others should repeat.
But, unlike the handstand in the water that players attempt to avoid elimination in the swimming pool game, there’s no balancing act required to keep pools safe from hidden electrical hazards that could lead to shock injuries and even death this summer.
What is required is an annual inspection performed by a licensed electrician or pool contractor.
“Swimming pool, spa and hot tub inspections are especially important and should only be performed by licensed professionals,” said Andrew Martinez, vice president of Safety, Security and Business Resiliency at Southern California Edison. “Licensed professionals will ensure that life-saving devices are present and working and electrical systems are safely grounded and bonded.” ....

Edison International : SCE Expedites Grid Hardening to Reduce PSPS

Southern California Edison customers on the Tapo circuit in Simi Valley experienced four Public Safety Power Shutoffs between last November and December, affecting some, if not most, of the 1,374 customers on the circuit each time.
Under similar weather conditions and with the expedited grid hardening that SCE has initiated and targeted for completion by Oct. 1, before peak wildfire season, none of the PSPS outages likely would have occurred.
And the good news for customers is that it s only one of more than 60 cities and unincorporated communities in high fire risk areas, ranging from Santa Clarita to Malibu to Fontana, that should see a sharp reduction in the impacts of PSPS when SCE s expedited upgrades are completed on the most frequently impacted circuits. The work will also increase reliability in general. ....

If it’s true that the only time you start at the top is when you’re digging a hole, it’s even truer that the only way to start digging any hole safely is by calling 811 first.
That goes for planting a tree or shrub, building a patio, deck or fence and even installing a mailbox all among the top home-digging projects.
Unfortunately, about 40% of the estimated 31 million homeowners planning digging projects do not call 811 before digging, according to Call 811. This has led to millions of unintentional strikes to the country’s more than 200 million miles of underground utilities, potentially creating safety hazards and disrupting utility service. ....
