We knew what it was. we knew where it was going. we knew what it was trying to do. and by not taking it down, i mean, it was also a huge payload, like i said, the size of three school buses. so really the option of shooting that down over land wasn t a legitimate option because somebody could have gotten hurt. we used the time available to us, knowing what this thing was all about, we used that time to study it, to learn from it, to collect on it. then taking it down at the earliest opportunity in the water, and we have retrieved some of the debris and we re studying it. i ll be right there. let s separate that from these other three. these other three, what are some of the differences? altitude is a big difference. a risk to civilian aircraft? let me get through this. altitude is different. the chinese spy balloon was at 60,000-plus. well outside commercial air traffic concerns. ....

Spy balloon was crossing over american and then canadian airspace, one of the reasons he couldn t take action was because his assessment was it didn t pose a military intent or hostile intent so he couldn t take action there. it seems like the protocol has changed, or his ability to make the call when there s not an imminent threat militarily might have changed. can you explain to us what changed? why are we shooting them down all of a sudden? i kind of feel like i took care of that in my opening statement. i m happy to revisit. really two reasons here. in both cases they re different. we need to separate the chinese spy balloon. we knew what it was. we knew where it was going, we knew what it was trying to do. by not taking it down it was also a huge payload. like i said, the size of three ....

Down off the coast of south carolina, these appear smaller, much less payload, if any. they were not able to change altitude to have any sort of navigation. they were just free floating. which indicates a lower level of sophistication than the previous balloon. all three were shot down with missiles, which indicates that there is a capability to do so. but interestingly enough, it also seems to suggest that u.s. capability to detect these increased with changes to the radar systems that looked for these sort of things. so they have changed the sensitive of the radar sensitivity, as you said. does that mean we re going to see more of them. if we re going to start seeing more of them, are we going to be shooting things down left and right? not necessarily. one of the problems with balloons that i talked about previously is that they don t look like weapons systems to radar systems. they don t travel very fast. ....

It s in 45 feet of water. whether the condition, pretty tough, for instance, they were not able to get in the water and dive on it. over the course of the weekend, they were able to raise some of the debris, including electronics and some of the structure. do you have expectation when all of that payload is going to be collected? i don t. if i could tell you that, i would be a very wealthy man. it could take a long time. given the sea state and weather conditions, and we have to protect the safety of the divers. one last question, you said uncharted surveillance capabilities of these objects. last week, we were told several times that every precaution was taken to make sure the sensitive installation were covered. i don t know exactly what you all did. nor are you going to find out. but has there been a posture change nationwide, regarding all of these sensitive sites, proac proactively? if you re let me just put a fork in this. ....

? you know there s sometimes these things are not that easy to find. and so perhaps there is still a threat out there. and you know, we only have to go back to world war two when japan used balloons to firebomb the west coast, and so it s not a new tactic. that perhaps china is using sending these balloons over to conduct missions that can include electronic jamming or collection or variety of other types of missions from payload . sweet that could be underneath this that a satellite can t do. we are so divided right now, as a country , particularly in the information domain that you can t even have a conversation about this without having somebody call you a russian stooge or or in the pocket of china. you know, whatever. this is a real national security issue, and the administration needs to be very frank with the ....
