Eleanor Hewardine, who has died at the age of 87, was a pioneer of speech therapy services in Northern Ireland who overcame personal tragedy to make her profession one that everyone was talking about. Her active life, which included a love of family, gardening, travel and friends, was not in the least bit constricted by the fact that Eleanor was blind in one eye and partially sighted in the other. Widowed three times during her long and outstanding career as a speech therapist - through which she made a significant imapct on the modern service in Northern Ireland - she was better known by her previous married surnames, Shaw and Gildea. ....
