Amazonian community launches Ecuador's first major climate change case

Leaders of the Waorani village of Miwaguno in Ecuador s Orellana province have filed a lawsuit against PetroOriental SA, a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and China Petrochemical Corporation (SINOPEC), arguing that the climate change impacts of gas flaring and venting during oil extraction are “an ongoing, persistent violation of human rights and nature”.
The case, launched in December, is also being brought by the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), the NGO Acción Ecológica, FIDH’s member organisation in Ecuador, and the Union of People Affected by Chevron-Texaco (UDAPT). ....

Ecuador's indigenous people turn to ancestral remedies against Covid-19

Miwaguno, Ecuador, Dec 23 (efe-epa).- Residents of some indigenous communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon are choosing to rely on the natural remedies used by their ancestors as they battle the Covid-19 pandemic.
More than 3,200 indigenous people have contracted the coronavirus and 49 have perished, according to figures from Ecuador’s Health Ministry, but elders in this Waorani settlement on the edge of Yasuni National Park where nobody has died of Covid-19 have more confidence in traditional healing than modern medicine.
“We took natural, ancestral medicines, such as boiled lemon water and wild garlic,” Miwaguno’s leader, Juan Enomenga, told Efe. ....
