About Andrew Pelling Andrew Pelling is a biophysicist and professor at the University of Ottawa's Department of Physics. He is the co-founder of biomedical research at the Pelling Lab for Augmented Biology, known for its discovery that plant tissues can be harnessed to regenerate human cells. He also serves as co-founder and chief scientific officer of Spiderwort, a company that produces plant-based biomaterials. Pelling received a B.S. in Biological Chemistry from University of Toronto, and Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from University of California, Los Angeles. Copyright 2021 NPR. To see m...
Lockdown loaves show growth potential COVID-caught bioengineers rise baking interests to new levels. Baking the perfect bread – for cell growth. Credit: Andrew Pelling As any baking enthusiast will tell you, it’s all about the crumb. In the case of science, the porous nature of the humble bread crumb was the perfect structure for a scaffold. Scaffolds are the literal basis of regenerative medicine. They’re the structure that supports living cells, and developing novel materials suitable for them is a growing area within bioengineering. Growing cell tissues on scaffolds allows them to ...
